Viance History of Innovation

Viance, the leading innovator in the wood protection industry, began over 30 years ago and continues to develop advanced building material solutions that improve the performance and durability of wood products.

1985

D-Blaze® was developed as a fire retardant for treated wood for interior use. D-Blaze, a water-based fire retardant is effective at slowing down the spread of fire and smoke. D-Blaze does not off-gas and does not emit VOCs to the air that could cause harm.

1989

Stabilizers and water repellents proved to add benefits that extend the life of wood by resisting the effects of sun and weather extremes. Wood stays straighter, repels water, and checking is significantly reduced.

1992

Arsenic-free preservative Preserve® ACQ was developed as a new wood preservative for residential uses.

1996

Viance received the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for the active ingredient, DCOI used in Sea-Nine® marine antifoulants, the same active ingredient in Ecolife® stabilized treated wood, UltraPole® NXT wood utility poles and UltraArm NXT wood crossarms.

2002

Viance again awarded the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge: 2002 Designing Greener Chemicals Award for Preserve® ACQ, an environmentally advanced wood preservative.

2002

AuraLast® was developed for Jeld-Wen and is capable of fully treating the wood used for window components to the core unlike other products/processes that only treat the surface of the wood.

2008

Ecolife® was developed as the first non-metallic, residential wood preservative for above ground use.

2011

Ecolife® (EL2) is now a one-pack formulation with the combined stabilizer and water repellent components to make it easier for treaters. The Ecolife One Pack provides an emulsified formulation so that treaters can deliver consistent results for long-term performance.

2012

A fluorescent dye tracer to use with a UV light was developed to determine penetration of colorless, non-metallic preservatives in softwood species.

2013

DesignWood® in-cylinder colorants for treated wood provide color that lasts up to three times longer than other in-cylinder colorants on the market and outlasts cedar and redwood color.

2015

Preserve® CA-C One Pack formulation was developed to make it easier for treaters to treat wood without having to mix separate components. The new formulation improved treatability and enhanced product consistency.

2016

D-Blaze® was the first FRTW product to earn UL's GreenGuard Gold certification for low emissions. This also qualified D-Blaze for the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the LEED building rating system, making D-Blaze a preferred fire retardant product acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities.

2018

UP-23, an oil-borne wood preservative formulation based on the active ingredient DCOI, was registered with the EPA. UP-23 treated wood marketed as UltraPole® NXT became a game changer for wood utility pole infrastructural applications. DCOI is the first, new, oil-borne industrial wood preservative introduced in decades. UP-23 is intended for the treatment of southern pine wood species in the Southeast and Eastern US.

UPNXT innovations

2020

EPA approves UltraPole® NXT UP-23 Gen 2 as an environmentally-advanced preservative system for utility poles.

UPNXT innovations

2021

Viance successfully registered UP-50 with the EPA for the treatment of western species wood poles. UP-50 like its cousin UP-23, is based on the active ingredient DCOI.
