FEATURES

  • Long-term protection against decay and termite damage
  • Proven track record of 30-plus years service

Painting and Staining or Natural Weathering

  • High-quality oil and latex-based paints and stains or water-repellent coatings can be applied to improve weathering performance.
  • Left uncoated or with clear water repellent coatings, SupaTimber will weather to a natural gray color.
  • It is important to ensure that the wood is dry and clean prior to applying any coating.

PAINTING

Hot dipped galvanized designed for pressure treated wood or stainless steel fasteners and fittings are recommended. Stainless steel fasteners are strongly recommended for marine and applications or areas that are constantly wet. Anti-corrosion coatings applied to fasteners and fittings in contact with treated wood may enhance long-term performance. Direct contact of SupaTimber-treated wood with aluminum fasteners and fittings is not recommended. Viance always recommends that current building codes be consulted for up-to-date lists of approved fasteners.

* SupaTimber CCA is manufactured and sold by CSI, LLC., and marketed by Viance under license.

Marine Pilings LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)

Similarly, the Treated Wood Council has recently completed a life cycle assessment  (LCA) of the environmental impacts associated with the national production, use, and disposition of treated wood, concrete, galvanized steel, and plastic marine piles using the same life cycle assessment methodologies (per ISO 14044 standards.)

The results for treated wood marine piles are very similar to those of ACQ-treated decking, where less energy and fossil fuel are used in production, and less green house gases are generated during the lifespan.

For informational purposes only, the legacy AWPA “C” standards (pre-2003) are provided below.   The following list is taken from outdated AWPA standards only to illustrate examples of the types of wood that fall within each commercial standard. While the list is not exhaustive, it does provide some examples of specific uses. The newer “UC” standards should be used in new specs.

Standard   Use or Application
C2 Lumber and Timber (for Salt Water Use)
C3 Piles
C4 Poles
C9 Plywood
C14 Wood for Highway Construction
C16 Wood Used on Farms (Poles, Piles & Posts Used as Structural Members, Fence Posts & Plywood)
C18 Wood for Marine Construction
C22 Lumber and Plywood for Permanent Wood Foundations
C23 Round Poles and Posts Used in Building Construction
C24 Sawn Timber Used to Support Residential & Commercial Structures
C25 Sawn Crossarms
C28 Structural Glued-Laminated Members & Laminations before Gluing
C30 Lumber, Timbers & Plywood for Cooling Towers (2002 Book of Standards)
C33 Structural Composite Lumber
C34 Shakes & Shingles

Specifications

Categories of Forest Products That May be Treated With CCA

CCA (chromated copper arsenate) is registered for use only in pressure treatment of certain commodities. It is the treater’s responsibility to comply with the terms of the label. CCA should only be used in the approved categories of forest products in accordance with the respective Use Categories as specified by the American Wood Protection Association. Commodity specifications are identified in the most current edition of the AWPA’s Book of Standards.

Specify SupaTimber for non-residential applications in which conditions conducive to termites and fungal decay are present. These conditions would include any situation in which wood will be in contact with water, soil, concrete or masonry, subject to periodic wetting, or exposed to moisture or high humidity. Download SupaTimber CCA specs here.
